About Environmental Frontiers:

Environmental Frontiers Campus (EFCampus) focuses on issues at the intersection of environmental sustainability and urban development, enabling research and curricular opportunities that provide UChicago students a scientific and practical understanding of sustainable urban development. In EFCampus, students use campus data to advance research on applied projects that explore campus sustainability, such as saving energy in laboratory buildings, reducing food waste, and expanding the tree canopy, with an eye toward transferable knowledge to inform strategies in neighborhoods and whole urban areas.

The Environmental Frontiers Initiative invites applications for Summer 2026 Undergraduate Research Assistants.

EFCampus brings together a variety of campus stakeholders – students, faculty, and staff – to collaboratively explore issues of campus sustainability. It is a unique research opportunity for students interested in environmental issues and broader climate change goals.

We are looking for 1-2 undergraduate students to join our Laboratory Building Energy Analysis and Design projects, including working with the Campus Energy and Sustainability teams to assist with the Shut the Sash competition that collects data on fume hood openness, a leading cause of laboratory energy inefficiency, as well as managing a new Freezer Challenge.

The role is paid a stipend of $6,320 and will be full-time (about 40 hours/week for 10 weeks). Work is remote with occasional in-person meetings at the Facilities Services offices in Harper Court, located off 53rd Street.

Please reach out to Sativa Volbrecht, Campus Engagement Manager, Institute for Climate and Sustainable Growth, with any questions, svolbrecht@uchicago.edu.
