The Institute for Climate and Sustainable Growth is honored to welcome Becca Ward as its Chief of Staff. Ward most recently served as the Chief of Staff for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Manufacturing and Energy Supply Chains, overseeing a staff of 120 employees and the deployment of a $20 billion investment portfolio to strengthen domestic manufacturing, workforce, and supply chain security. In her new role, Ward will help translate the Institute’s ambitious vision into operational efficiency.
“We are just plain thrilled to have Becca join the Institute’s team,” said Institute Director Michael Greenstone, the Milton Friedman Distinguished Service Professor in Economics. “Her exceptional knowledge and experiences in both government and non-profits will be invaluable as we serve our mission to help the world balance its climate and growth goals through education, research, and impact.”
Previously at the DOE, Ward served as the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Senate Affairs, leading Senate strategy and engagement in the formation and passage of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the Inflation Reduction Act, and the CHIPS and Science Act. Before DOE, Ward was the Managing Director and Acting Executive Director for the Clean Energy Leadership Institute (CELI), where she was pivotal in transitioning CELI from a grassroots non-profit to a professionally staffed and nationally recognized organization, which included the launch of CELI’s office in Chicago.
“I’m passionate about advancing pragmatic climate solutions and building the next generation of energy and climate leaders,” says Ward. “That’s why I’m thrilled to join the Institute, which has the unique ability to advance world-class research, demonstrate policy successes, and build educational programs to ensure students are well-rounded and up to the challenge of building an economically prosperous and climate-safe future.”
Ward began her career in the U.S. Senate, where she spent seven years developing climate, energy, and infrastructure policy for U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR). Ward received her bachelor’s degree from Duke University, graduating with highest distinction in Public Policy and a certificate in Energy Technology and Environmental Impact.
