At the 42nd International Battery Seminar and Exhibit (IBSE) it was announced that this year’s winner of the Shep Wolsky Battery Innovator Award for 2025 is Shirley Meng.
Dr. Meng is the Liew Family Professor of the School of Molecular Engineering at the University of Chicago. She serves as the chief scientist for energy storage science at Argonne National Laboratory.
Dr. Meng is the Director of the energy storage Research Alliance, an innovation hub funded in 2024 by the US Department of Energy The Office of Science. She is also the principal investigator of the research group, Laboratory for Energy Storage and Conversion (LESC), author and co-author of more than 320 peer reviewed journal articles, two book chapters, over 20 issued and pending patents.
Dr. Meng is a world leader in material science for energy storage. Among her contributions are discoveries of novel electrolyte, electro materials and super ionic conductors for both lithium and sodium batteries. She pioneered the use of cryogenic microscopy for battery materials and their interfaces. Her work has transformed the ways and how we can design and manipulate energy storage materials.
