At CERAWeek, I gained valuable insights from industry leaders on market dynamics and
roadmaps for the energy transition, distinguishing the fundamental mechanics of the energy
sector from external noise. A key takeaway was the consensus among experts from diverse
backgrounds on the core priorities of energy policy: security and affordability. This
experience helped me develop a pragmatic perspective on the industry, resistant to shifting
sentiments that can hinder innovation and investment.

I was particularly struck by the attention given to some emerging technologies. Hydrogen,
which I initially underestimated, is proving more resilient than expected. Biofuels, while far
from market-ready, are considered essential to a successful energy transition. Carbon
capture, despite high costs, is widely regarded as crucial for decarbonizing hard-to-abate
sectors and creating carbon-negative products.

The most significant lesson I learned was how the energy industry prioritizes reliability,
affordability, and environmental impact—always in that order—when pursuing an effective
energy transition. While this may seem intuitive, understanding why these priorities must be
addressed sequentially is essential to achieving all three. Additionally, I deepened my
appreciation for energy’s role as a catalyst for societal progress and a powerful force against
poverty.

While my views on the urgency of climate action remain unchanged, this experience has
equipped me with a more analytical and solution-oriented mindset. I now assess energy
challenges with a critical eye, focusing on practical and effective solutions that can work
across different stages of economic development and political swings.

I will apply these insights as I advance my studies in finance at UChicago and transition into
the professional world. The knowledge gained and connections made at CERAWeek will one
day help me become a more strategic and impactful leader in the energy industry. And, of
course, I enjoyed a true Texas experience by attending the rodeo and state fair!
